Errotic Contaguous Transfromation

We know that merely moving from one side to another changes us. Cis-pacific by birth, transatlantic by happenstance, I am now cis-atlantic and I so see differently. Sean Smith's "transfrom" tells us of such changes better, more efficiently. It is. It does not merely tell.

We perceive borders where there may be none. We forget how the smallest change changes everything. We fail to remember how we are infected by what is closest to us—how contagion comes from that that in contiguous with us. Sean shows us this again.

We are driven by desires programmed into us, desires that keep us as individuals and as a species alive and continuing. But those desires do not always move us without our causing mistakes via their engines pushing us. The magic of life is its unlikelihood in the face of its reality, its irrationality in the face of its perfect order, its disorder in the face of its ability to thrive.

A single word can tell us this. A true smith can tell us with a single word.

Making "rustacean"

Geof Huth, "rustacean" (2 April 2016)
So I thought of the pwoermd while drinking coffee, a simple pwoermd, one made merely by clipping a word, but it somehow seems like it has always existed.

But the pwoermd was not meant to be just a word. It was also an object. And I needed the right object.

Karen and I walked the too-clean (who knew?) streets of Manhattan searching for something rusty.

She suggested a couple of nails in boards, but we could not remove them. Rebar protruding from concrete wouldn't work for the same reason.

But I found on Hudson Street a metal planter, rusting along its edges, and I was able to bend a loose end back and forth enough to get the rustacean I needed.

(All my object pwoermds are adamic to some degree.)

And I wrote upon it my word, though it did not show enough. I wanted a different ink, but I did not have it.

We do not always have everything we need. We do not always make everything we want.

It is Not Easy to Change

Sven Staelens, "change" (2016)
Plus ca change plus c'est la meme chose.

A familiar sight now quite arranged as it usually is still reminds us of itself.

We return to our memory to find out reality changed.

What remains the same is everything we have forgotten has happened.

When Sven swins swans swoon.

We see only because we have been made to see.

International Pwoermd Writing Month is About to Begin

TEAMWAER (Indian Fort Mountain, Berea, Kentucky, 2015-10-23)

Friday marks the beginning of the ninth annual celebration of International Pwoermd Writing Month, the smallest poetry celebration of the month T.S. Eliot accidentally created by re-imagining the opening of The Canterbury Tales as "April is the cruellest month."

Cruellest. It is cruelty that defines the core of this month we use to celebrate poetry. "Cruellest." Two ells to the word because the St.-Louis-born Eliot remade himself as an Englishman, changed the accent he used for his words, changed his life, and wrote some good (and sometimes challenging poetry).

From his words came the idea for April as poetry month--and then any other number of poetry-related months. And, eventually, at the very end of the line, after all the other ideas had been used up, I added International Pwoermd Writing Month. International, because I'm a person from many countries and many continents. Pwoermd, because the major focus of my writing is the pwoermd, the one-word poem.

It is a simple month. I write at least one pwoermd a month, and I encourage others to write as many as they want. People tell me they are writing pwoermds, and I watch and publicize what they do.

There will be a couple (maybe even a few) surprises along the way, too. So watch this space for news, as well as my Twitter and Facebook accounts ("geofhuth" gets you to each of them).

And, if you plan to participate in InterNaPwoWriMo VIII, as I "abbreviate" it, send me a note here, or to Twitter, Facebook, or my email account. (The last is easy to figure out.)

And let's celebrate the pwoermd! It all starts on April 1st.

InterNaPwoWriMo VI (2013) Documented at Last

Just a note today to say that I received the wisdoms of the universes in a single string of letters, which is "A record of the 2013 International Pwoermd Writing Month." Edited and designed by mIEKAL aND, this little handful of a book is a collection of all the pwoermds of that InterNaPwoWriMo that mIEKAL and I could collect from the pwoermdists working that year. It is also a dense collection of what the pwoermd can do, as evidenced by the work of 31 people.

The book opens with a little essay by me on pwoermds and InterNaPwoWriMo--an essay that opens with a sentence by Ralph Waldo Emerson, a sentence that seems to be about pwoermds, and also a sentence that the poet Donato Mancini independently wrote himself this week. It also includes short micro-essays on five pwoermds in the anthology.

Buy your copy soon, while copies are still available on print on demand (follow the link):

Pwoermdic Meditation 10

Leave the pwoermd alone, and it will still conduct meaning. Put the pwoermd in the corner of a dark room, and it mean something more. Place the pwoermd in the sun, and it will burn.

Pwoermdic Meditation 9

Don't ask what the pwoermd is. Do not try to make it give up its secrets. Take it into your body. Take it into your body, and allow it to melt.

Pwoermdic Meditation 8

The only way to lie is with a word. The best word to lie with is the pwoermd. As a poet, you must accept the responsibility to lie through poetry. Use the pwoermd well.

Pwoermdic Meditation 7

Why do you want the pwoermd to make your life better? Why does the pwoermd make your life better? How could you make your life better without the pwoermd?
